review 1: I must admit that I was at first skeptical of reading a YA that is touted as both a romance and a thriller. However by the end of Julie Berry’s lecture at BYU this year, I was hooked. Berry’s ability to create atmosphere and emotion in the few short paragraphs she read from this best selling book sold me. A hauntingly captivating book, All the Truth That's in Me brings to life the words of Judith, a young girl taken captive from her family only to return two years later, now a mutilated outcast with a dark secret. Now as Judith finds her loved ones in danger, she must face the decision to break her silence and save them, or lose them forever. With Julie Berry's intimate second person writing style she paints an unbelievably beautiful picture of love, loss, courage, an... mored finding your voice. The fragmented style of writing mixed with sincerity of Judith’s voice will make the reader feel as if they are there, listening to Judith’s as they are formed in her very head. And it’s not just Judith who is brought to life in this narrative. With her commanding and beautifully scripted language, each character Berry has created possesses their own background full of rich and colorful stories that although may not be shared in complete depth, can almost be seen and felt through their descriptions. I highly recommend this book to any and all readers; especially young girls who are struggling to find their voice in society. There are few books that posses such raw emotion and power such as All the Truth That's in Me, and it will surely uplift the spirit and leave you wanting more. I simply cannot wait to discovery more of Julie Berry's beautiful writing!
review 2: Good overall, addressing some important issues with likeable characters. That said, I felt like the whole Puritan setting was merely used to make the author's life easier and it made the story far less relatable and engaging. I also feel like the kind of writing style this book tries to emulate doesn't help with building the whole historical setting - sometimes you need more than a few lines per chapter to get an idea of what's going on! I like short chapters with vague writing styles that are used to create mystery, but in this it was taken too far and made the book seem hollow, thus undermining the importance of the issues it addresses. less
