A Haunted Home Renovation Mystery
review 1: contractor Mel Turner has the ability to see ghosts. Would make for a good mystery, since she renovates old homes in San Francisco. But, the story gets muddled with volunteerism, adopting dogs from shelters and sister jealousies. Thirty years earlier a family is murdered and two children were able to escape. It was believed to be a murdered suicide, until one of the children finally remembers what happened and is murdered. Mel Turner gets involved while supervising a volunteer group in the house next door and a volunteer finds the woman's body in the shed. The police rule it an overdose but the lead investigator and Mel proves its murder. Some may enjoy it while others won't.
review 2: Another good, fluffy mystery by Blackwell. This time Mel investigates the "M
... moreurder House", where a father killed his wife and daughter. His two younger children escaped. It was like Amityville without the "get out", weird doll/pig, and blood dripping down the walls. The best feature of the story was the sudden appearance of Mel's older sister, Cookie. (Why do people adopt food nicknames in order to seem cute?) As an only child, I cannot speak from first-hand experience but I have watched many friends deal with the favorite sibling who has a pathological need to always be the center of attention. I still think Mel should have punched her just once. less

3.5 - I love this series and Juliet Blackwell but I found this book was too much inside Mel's head.
