review 1: Though the first and last book of the series was strong, this one felt weak and thrown together. It chronicles M.A.'s childless marriage to the Affair of the Necklace. I had a hard time sympathizing with M.A. as she came across as whiny and blameless, such as blaming her frivolous life on lack of children...I think it was she was bored and didn't know what to do with herself, along with the fact that she wasn't mature enough to rule a country. The romance between M.A. and Axel was ok,I found myself skimming through those parts.... The Affair of the Necklace was the only exiciting plot line in the novel and I liked how Grey changed different viewpoints and built the climax around that part.
review 2: I enjoyed this book about Marie Antoinette very much. The end
... more seemed a bit more "political" than this first part where the society of the Queen is the central focus. Parts of the plot line seemed a bit glossed over to me though. There are times when the queen has a falling out with one of her ladies and they depart court, only to show up suddenly later with very little explanation. I also was very disappointed with the introduction of Axel to the Queen. Their first encounter is only mentioned after the fact. less

2.5. Meh. Seems factually ok but written in MA's voice and that got to me after a while.
