review 1: I love Olsen's characters, and I think he does too. Their flaws and foibles of the denizens of Department Q seemed more interesting in this book than the actual case being solved. The murderer was just too perfect, too smart, too strong and too evil. You knew Carl would get him in the end, so he just didn't seem threatening somehow. There were also a boatload of plot threads, a number of them involving the lives of the Dept. Q staff, that didn't get resolved satisfactorily. Some of the characters that died didn't seem to advance the plot or the character but just served to make the last half of the book almost operatic in its level of suffering. As much as I enjoy Department "Q", this one was a bit disappointing.
review 2: Although the only copy of this... more book on goodreads of A Conspiracy of Faith was a Danish copy. It is also in English which I read. I think the author Jussi is skilled and he tells quite a story with complex turns and twists. That said there are too many names that are confusing maybe because they are foreign names but more than that the ex wife, the villains sister's husband etc... too many to keep track of. And the story doesn't add anything to the human condition as a matter of fact there are too many cliqued characters like the villains religious father who had not even a thread of love of kindness and tortured the villain then his stepfather was a paperdoll copy of the fathers too much. That said I had to take a break and read something else before I could finish this. less
