review 1: This is the first in the Dect.Sejer series, which I generally like quite a bit...but I guess Karin Fossum was just 'developing' him and that he has mellowed well w/ age because he's just a bit of a pompous guy..well, maybe not pompous but not particularly likable from a reader's perspective...and the whole mystery thing - CLUES, etc - just didn't happen. Ah well, added it to the 'series' and moved on!!
review 2: Although this is the first book in the Konrad Sejer series, it is, of course, the last to be translated into English. However, this did not "feel" like a first effort. Karin Fossum brought the character to life in the way I was accustomed to in her later Sejer novels, in that there was nothing choppy or ungainly to this book. It was smooth, flowed,
... moreand if I didn't already know it, I would never have guessed this was the first book in the series. Excellent story, writing and character development. Since I knew what the second book was going to be about, the ending made more sense to me than it might to a first-time reader. However, if I was going to take any piece of my 5-star rating away, it would be just a sliver, for the abruptness of the conclusion. It did leave me wondering and wanting to know what happened to the characters next, but it felt incomplete at the same time. less
