review 1: A sociopathic nurse is the main character in this Karin Fossum novel, a dark story that relies more on menacing atmosphere than on graphic descriptions of criminal activity. I always enjoy how this author insightfully explores the less desirable aspects of human nature. There are some elements of elder abuse involved in the telling, but this is primarily a relatively low-key study about the psycho who might be living next door to any reader.
review 2: Reminiscent of the works of Ruth Rendell in which the reader is plunged into the often twisted psyche of the guilty rather than the victimized, Fossum has written a mesmerizing psychological study. No whodunnit here -- Ricktor, the self delusional first person narrator, sees his actions as the result of being tota... morelly justified and does not feel either responsible or reprehensible. Let us all hope we do not see his face as our caretaker in our waning days. A true tour de force in holding interest while presenting a central figure so unsympathetic. less
