review 1: Ok. While not the SCARIEST book I've ever read (that spot is reserved for Stephan King's IT), it was very creepy. If I'm going to be honest, that last scene with Creepy Clown Lady is proooobably going to give me nightmares. But! I couldn't stop reading. I love a book that I pick up and HAVE to ignore everything else until I've finished. It's rare to find a paranormal thriller that doesn't include witches, vampires, and or werewolves. I think that's what first intrigued me about this book. That and I've been binge watching Ghost Adventures, but I have no new episodes available to watch, and this filled its void. Love Perry. Did not like how poor her self esteem is. But that also made her relatable. Dex. Oh Dex. I'm interested in learning more about him. And seeing more of h... moreim and Perry together. I can't wait to read the next book. I've bought the next three on my kindle because I am that sure of this series. I would probably start reading Red Fox now, except I have to work in the morning and I'm too old to not need sleep. I'll probably still start reading it tonight.
review 2: 5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun and Exciting Read Full Of Outrageous Characters, June 24, 2011I knew I had been pulled into this book from the get go. I lived it. The characters are perfect and you know what the author wants you to know by the time you get halfway into the book; and only what she wants you to know. Perry, the main female character, is hysterical. She is funny and irreverant and I wish she lived next door. I like the way she talks and I like the way she thinks. She takes most things with a grain of salt and then makes you laugh out loud at a witticism. Dex, the hot male character, is precious. I would like him to live here WITH me, not next door. He seems to be a gentleman of the old school, although he had some rough edges in the beginning. The chemistry and the way the two characters are bound together is very well done. The author's ability to totally captivate you and pull you into the story is remarkable. I was completely absorbed and hated having to go to bed or put it down. I picked it back up first chance I got and finished it on the second sitting. Nothing, not food or wine was going to stop me from following the awesome plot created by an excellent writer. I never give out the story in a review. Read it yourself. I only tell you whether I liked it. I gave it five stars. If I re-read it, I would give it five stars. Most of all, I loved the suspense Karina Halle could create. She dragged you into her suspense and then threw in a ridiculous comment and all the air went out of you. If she wanted to surround you with your own goose-bumps she could, and did. I was engulfed by this tale from the beginning. Go ahead, ask me if I liked it...I saw some low scores and I say pish-tosh. They must have had no imagination at all. People who cannot see what an author is saying, not just read it, should watch TV and do the world a favor by not giving low scores to a deserving writer. Let them try writing a book.Lastly, one of my favorite lines in "Darkhouse" jumped out at me. Dex was talking to Perry, who is a little over-weight and not a gorgeous female like Dex's girlfriend. Used to being ignored or insulted, she told Dex she didn't eat pies when, in fact, she loved them but didn't want to seem like a pig and indulge herself. He said to her, "I just want you to enjoy the pies in life." God, I could have eaten him with a spoon.Forget any low scores. Treat yourself to a good book, excellent plot, wonderful characterizations and everything else you could ask for. Karina, you Rock!!! less
