review 1: Summary/Critique:Louise, The Adventures of a Chicken by Kate DiCamillo is a children's fiction picture book. This is a story of an adventurous chicken named Louise. She is discontented with her henhouse and goes on several journeys around the world in search of excitement. She sails on a pirate ship, performs in the circus, and mingles with an exotic fortune teller. Though Louise enjoys her adventures, she learns to appreciate her safe and warm henhouse. DiCamillo uses extensive dialogue to tell the tale of one troubled chicken and develop Louise’s character. She also styles text in a visually appealing manner, that follows the storyline. I really enjoyed reading this book because the illustrations and text guided and visualized exactly what was happening in the story fo... morer me. Classroom Use:I would use this book in the classroom and read out loud the entire book to my students. First, I would have the students read through the book only looking at the pictures and infer what Louise is doing on each of her adventures. Next, read the words of the story. Finally, have students retell the story to classmates.Genre: FictionFormat: Picture bookReading level: K-3rd gradeTheme/Topic: Adventure, AnimalsGender, Race/Ethnicity, Socioeconomic Status: There are no important messages regarding gender, race/ethnicity, or socioeconomic status represented in this book because the characters are animals.Citation:DiCamillo, K., & Weise, C. review 2: One day a hen named Louise wondered about the world outside her henhouse. Thus began the travels of Louise who longed for adventure, and learned to love home equally with each experience away.A good curriculum connection for this book would be to use it to inspire creative writing. Classes could brainstorm ideas for new adventures for Louise and add their own chapters to the book. I so loved this charming hen Louise and her thirst for new scenery. I was flabbergasted when she wanted to go on another adventure after her somewhat disastrous first trip chock full of pirates, rough seas and wrecked ships! But such was her wanderlust. She wasn’t even deterred by a stint at the circus where a lion almost ate her. No, it took a journey far from home to satiate her quest for the new. After she freed some of her fellow foreign fowl, Lousie determined there was no place like home. My favorite scene in the book is the last page which finds Louise comfortably curled up in her familiar henhouse on a rainy day.The illustrations by Harry Bliss are big beautiful watercolors that fill the pages and suck the reader into the scenery. The intended audience for this book would be for first grade to third grade. less
