Bink & Gollie
review 1: In the tradition of Frog and Toad... I love this genre. I think it would be very hard to do, but it looks so easy. So few words, but aah, they are well chosen and the illustrations are essential to the story. In this case, they are every contemporary in style, by an animation expert. I should imagine this would be highly popular with newly independent readers and beginner readers, as well as being a great read-aloud. Another Kate DiCamillo win.
review 2: Gollie and Bink go to the state fair. Bink tries her shot at Whack-a-Duck to win a free donut, but winds up throwing every ball in the Duck Man’s face. Bink loses the game, and her and Gollie go to the fair’s talent show. Gollie wants be part of it, so she goes up on stage to show off her several talents! G
... moreollie gets scared on stage and leaves the building. Bink and Gollie visit the livestock, and Gollie recites “Old Macdonald had a farm” for them. Next, they go to see Madame Prunely, a fortuneteller during a two for one special. She tells them that she sees two friends, one tall, one short, together in the future. Bink understands that her and Gollie will be friends forever. The theme of Two for One is friendship. Gollie and Bink visit a fortuneteller at the fair. Madame Prunely tells their “fortune,” when really Bink and Gollie are wearing large buttons that say what they did at the fair from which Madame Prunely can infer their “past fortune.” Madame Prunely looks into her crystal ball and announces that she sees two friends together. Bink says, “that’s the only future I need to know!” and runs off with Gollie. I thought it was a cute story because Bink and Gollie understand that they will be friends until the end. I probably would not use this book to teach a lesson in class, but I think students would enjoy reading it. less
