The Empress of Rome
review 1: I utterly tore through this, loving Sabina despite her flaws, and being amused by Vix despite his utter ridiculousness in some cases. I thought Quinn did a good job here of spinning off from the story told in Mistress of Rome without too much overlapping 'sequel' flavor - Vix and Sabina are both so different from their childhood versions in the previous that it isn't distracting, and the other characters who overlap are minor characters in one or the other of the stories. Overall, it all works. I loved the first half and the end left me a little cold, perhaps because it doesn't really sound finished - there is no tidy wrap-up, and another sequel is pretty obviously necessary to learn how it all goes down. That's my only real complaint - I don't mind the lack of a happy end... moreing, but the sense that there is still so much left to tell is a bit frustrating.
review 2: I had the great fortune to fall upon this book at a discount store. Since I have a great interest in historical fiction and Ancient civilizations, I thought I would give this book a try. I am so happy I did. I absolutely loved this book. Kate Quinn uses vivid imagery and exquisite character adaptation/growth. I was very pleased when I got to the end and it was hinted that a sequel was to follow. I have not had the chance to read the first two books in The Empress of Rome series but those are most definitely on my list of books to read right away. If you like a strong female character who is not perfect and an exceptionally hot male lead then this is the book for you.(Especially if you have an obsession with historical fiction as I do.) This book is the perfect blend of action, scandal, and romance. A definite must read! less
