review 1: Four+ stars for the main short stories and their oft-heartbreakingly beautiful prose, but one star for the connecting thread. The dream-like visuals combined with weak banter and clunky metaphysics just didn't work for me. I thought it would have had more impact as a collection of short stories, perhaps woven loosely together a la Cloud Atlas. This is my first Donohue book. But although I didn't care for this one, the man can write. I'll be reading more--fingers crossed.
review 2: Creatively told through mythical and archetypal tales, this third novel by Keith Donohue takes us on a funny, touching, and inventive journey through five hundred years of American history and sexual politics. A man finds himself lying on his bathroom floor with a major head injury an
... mored must endure a series of seven visitations from women who appear to have it in for him, and who may or may not have something to do with his predicament. Their stories, punctuated by his own surreal and darkly comic speculations about how he might have landed in such a situation, make for a very entertaining and revelatory read. Alternately wry, moving, warm, and sad, the novel ends with a promise of rebirth, renewal, and a suggestion of hope for the future. If you enjoy this one, I would also recommend the author's first, "The Stolen Child" - I enjoyed it very much as well, and have his second at the top of my reading list. less
