review 1: If you’re looking for a creepy read this fall, look no further than The Boy Who Drew Monsters by Keith Donohue. It features a boy with Asperger’s Syndrome who can literally make creatures come to life simply by drawing them. The northeast coastal setting (lighthouse included!) only adds to the atmosphere, and the tension and creep factor ramps up as the book progresses. It’s a quick read and well worth your time and money. Four Stars.
review 2: Two stars is all I can give; although the abrupt ending addressed one plot point, another was left completely forgotten. And that's the problem I had with the whole book, it just never really lived up to expectations. I was annoyed with the writing, florid in one sentence and dull in the next, as well as the omnisi
... morecent narrator, who could never decide what to call the boy, referring to him as Jack, Jack Peter, J.P. and Jip all in one page, without the benefit of any particular protagonist addressing the boy by any of those names. The writer must have realized this, as later on the narrator does settle on the use of the various names based on whatever character was addressing the boy and how the boy referred to himself, but the names were still too scattered and random too many times to be unintentional, and I guess I just don't get the point. All the red herrings made the book a chore to read, as it took that much longer to figure out what was going on, and contrarily, far too quickly for the characters to figure everything out, and ultimately there was absolutely no reason for the kid to draw monsters anyway. This is the kind of book that demands a series, but only if a better writing/editing team does it. less

Was compelling and interesting throughout but finishes too suddenly with a rather lame ending.
