review 1: My first encounter with Carol Danvers was the issue of UNCANNY X-MEN where Rogue moved in. And Carol revealed herself to be someone who was severely wounded, twice now betrayed by those she thought were her friends. The character has subsequently been treated with a lot more dignity than she was in the 80s, and DeConnick is the latest writer to step in and further develop the character. Here, Carol is smart, brave and accomplished...no victimhood here. DeConnick smartly streamlines Carol's origin for new readers, all while adding further layers to Carol's background and friendships. I'm not a fan of the artwork until Emma Rios shows up, but I don't think Rios is quite the fit for artist, either. If the book can find the right artist, coupled with the upcoming CAPTAIN MARVE... moreL film, Marvel could be looking at its next big hit.
review 2: While this volume of Captain Marvel starts off strong with a great character in Carol Danvers it quickly becomes hard to follow and understand. Carol is great and it's easy to stay interested in her. She's a tough woman who can obviously hold her own in a fight but she also has insecurities and worries of her own to deal with despite being the most powerful superhero around. Plus the story briefly touches on how she became who she is so reading past issues of Ms Marvel isn't totally necessary if you're willing to do a quick Google search. However things get twisted once the time travel plot is introduced. Time travel is already a complicated subject to execute and unfortunately the comics within this volume don't really do the best job of explaining what exactly is in. It was too jumbled up. I still enjoyed reading this but it does lose stars for a confusing and poorly explained plot. less
