review 1: Just jumping from the Marvel Cinematic Universe into Marvel's actual comics? Like to brush up on Carol Danver's exploits before she becomes the first woman to get her own stand-alone Marvel movie? Then this is an excellent place to start out. The first volume starts Carol off alongside familiar faces (Tony Stark/Iron Man, "Rhodey"/Iron Patriot, the Guardians of The Galaxy team consisting of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot, and Rocket Raccoon) before jettisoning off on her own adventure, investigating a young female warrior who has come to Earth after her planet has seemingly been poisoned. Carol may not always be the best with kids, or the best at diplomacy, but her and her rag-tag team of aliens are going to get the job done, whatever it takes. Beautiful artwork, snappy pa... morecing, and a lot of humor.
review 2: This book was close to being a four star book. This is the first time I've read a Captain Marvel story and as far as the story goes I got a winner. This sci-fi adventure was a great ride with alien planets and space battles and evil galactic empires. It may sound more like a Star Wars knock off but as I read it I got more of a Doctor Who vibe minus all the science/time traveler stuff. A rollicking good ride that focuses on character and story than action and was great fun to read. I really enjoyed this adventure but the difference between Doctor Who and Captain Marvel is simple but huge. Basically I like Doctor Who - in all his various forms - and I didn't really care for Captain Marvel. She comes across as petulant, flakey, overemotional and uneven. She'll turn on a dime from smart and collected to hot mess screaming at the other characters in the book no good reason and answer to every crisis seems to be to kick ass. I don't have a problem with that as a rule bit this book takes it to the extreme - it seems to be all she does. A shame really because I enjoyed the story so much and the Captain looks good no matter what mood she is. I love this costume of hers and it fit s perfectly in this world but I just didn't care for her. She's too young and self-involved. A pity really because I think this is a strong book and it fills a void in Marvel land ie. good sci-fi/superhero adventure tale involving a female hero. We need more of this stuff to counter the weighty existential problems facing her male counter parts. I really wanted to like this character and all the elements are there for a good run. The writing is good the artwork is top notch complements the sci-fi aspects but she needs to Ms. Danvers needs to chill out a little and pull herself together a little that'll easily buy her another star in my book. less
