review 1: The whimsical, playful tone of this book is deceiving. At first reading, it seems frivolous and desultory. However, if you actually take time to do the exercises it contains, you'll be exposed to manifold delights. Smith's approach to art education is not only fun and accessible to all ages and abilities, but as a bonus it's strength lies in what might be called its "hidden curriculum": developing mindfulness through observation, building methodological thinking and fomenting a sense of wonder for the quotidian world. My only criticism is that despite the Keri Smith's insistence on reader documenting all of their discoveries, her own referencing is sparse. She does give credit where it is due, but then neglects to mention whether the information came from a book, interview... more or aphorism. I suppose that this may be a part of her overall agenda, which is to get people out there discovering things for themselves in libraries and in the world. Regardless, This is a delightful little primer for anyone wanting to use lateral thinking and innovation to jump start the creative process.
