The Hollows Graphic Novel
review 1: I enjoyed the previous Hollow's graphic novel Blood Work, if only for the pretty artwork and the enjoyment of seeing the novel characters come to life on the page.Blood Crime however flopped. My first criticism is the lack of true 'story-telling.' As narrator Ivy essentially just tells us everything thats going on both with the action, and with her emotions (telling, rather than showing is surely even more of a literary crime in graphic novels.) Ivy flip-flops throughout the story, rather than presenting as a deep character with layers she comes across as a child, which does not sit well with the Ivy of the novels at all. It seems an attempt to reveal Ivy's vulnerability but instead is inconsistent.Second flaw: the artwork is basic at best and awkward at worst. Many of the... more scenes felt like movie story boards - technically depicting action just fine, but lacking any artistry or flair. I also found that many of the character's facial expressions off-putting, even on the odd occasion not being sure what they were supposed to be feeling.I suspect that Harrison is suffering from Prequelitis in writing the story for these graphic novels, and doesn't dare have anything too compelling lest it marr the canon story of the Hollow's novels. In short, not an entirely unwelcome distraction, but also not worth seeking out.
review 2: A must read for any Hollows fan. This is the second prequel to the Hollows series telling the story of Rachel and Ivy as partners in the I.S. (before Jinks). The point of view is from Ivy, which gives a nice insight into her that's not as clear in the novels. The story is well presented and ties into the novels quite nicely. The art work is good, although I expect this is where Hollows fans will complain. Everyone has their own idea of what the characters in the novels should look like so not everyone will like how they are drawn in this book. In my opinion, I think they're very close to how they are described in the novels. less

Love the story, Kim's writing, just can't get into the artwork for either graphic novel.

A great story that moves fast and holds your interest. Makes you want it to on longer.

My only complaint is that graphic novels always feel so short.
