review 1: When I first heard about this addition to the Hollows series, I thought it was one I could go without. I didn't think it really had much it could add to my collection and did I really need it just to have a map of the church? But the more and more I heard people talk about it, the more curious I became and of course the more I wanted it. The Hollows Insider is definitely so much more than a map of the church. From it's gorgeous cover (that glows in the dark!) to the colorful pages filled with paperclips, tabs, and even coffee stains, this book provides a great insight into the world many of us know and love. Kim Harrison is one of the best at world building and making connections when you least expect it and there are several of those here thanks to the blogger turned jour... morenalist Devin, his co-writer Winnie, and the correspondences we see from Trent and his colleagues. The book starts just before Dead Witch Walking (book #1) and it turns out Devin lost his hair from that misaligned spell on the bus when our dear beloved Rachel was chasing down the Were. His new goal in life is to find out as much as he can about her. We continue to see the information he gathers right up until right before Pale Demon (book #9). For the most part this installment read really fast at only 300 pages. The species profiles could be a little slow, especially for an avid fan since they are bound to know all those characteristics already. I admit I skimmed the spell pages. They are cool, but I didn't care to read every detail. My favorite part was the list of Jenks curses and the 12 days of Pixy Christmas!
review 2: I really loved this book but it did drag in some places (species descriptions) and there definitely was some filler content (magic spells and recipes). However, it was definitely worth the buy just for the maps, character pics, and memos between Trent and his lackeys. Analyzing Rachel's actions from an outsider's point of view was a lot of fun too. She probably would seem like an attention whore to someone who didn't know her true motives. less
