review 1: I have read several books that go into in-depth information about a series, i.e., Outlander and Shannara. They were very informative but dry, dry reading. The Hollows Insider is written by an investigative reporter who is hellbent on getting the dirt on Rachel Morgan. I did skim a couple of sections. I really wasn't interested in the recipes for charms, spells, how to summon a demon or Takata's lyrics. Learning these things did not enhance the Hollows experience for me. I did find the memos to and from Trent Kalamack rather disingenuous since he above all people should be aware of the risk of putting information in writing where it can be discovered by his enemies (as it was) Overall it was an enjoyable and quick read. I liked the formatting. I also don't know how I missed... more that the Hollows is in Kentucky. For some reason I had always thought it was a suburb of Cincinnati. These leads me to question how jurisdiction can be crossed from State to State but I guess if the FIB and Inderland Security are "federal" agencies it wouldn't be as much of an issue.
review 2: This book stands as an excellent reference for the events that have occurred in Kim Harrison's 'Hollows' series up to & including the novel, "Pale Demon". It follows blogger/Hollows Gazette journalist & human Devin Crossman's ill-considered & vengeful investigation of Rachel & her pals, and is an interesting story in its own right, making this book more than just a reference book, but a 'Hollows' story unto itself. Additional content totally immerse the reader in Rachel & Devin's world, including Inderland species dossier, Were Registry entries, recipes, maps, spells & charms… even the lyrics to several of Takata's songs and excerpts from Rynn Cormel's 'Vampire Dating Guide'. This impressive book was fun to read (although some of the overly-detailed spells/charms got a little tedious), and Kim Harrison is to be commended on such an imaginative & insightful reference to this amazing world she has created. (NOTE: I have the original hardback copy, which is a full colour, coffee-table type book - love the glow-in-the-dark jacket! - that every serious fan of the 'Hollows' series must have!) …5 stars, although recommended for serious fans of the 'Hollows' only, as the book won't make a lot of sense if you haven't read any of the series. less
