review 1: Really action packed novel with lots of characters. So many characters in fact that I felt like I had been dropped in front of a movie screen as I read along. Unbeknownst to me, I was dropped in the middle of a series. I hate when that happens without my prior knowledge. Though the book stands on its own accord, and old incidents are referenced throughout, it's hard for me to determine exactly how much I missed leading up to this specific novel. I wish authors/editors/somebody would add a line that "this book is #_ in the series". So now I don't know whether to go back to find the book before this one or forge ahead to Animal2. Decisions, decisions.
review 2: I've been reading urban fiction since 6th grade. Sometime in high school I was given Gangsta by... more K'wan and I remember being so enthralled by it. I kept recommending it to everyone and eventually I loaned it out and never received it back. Years later, I was reintroduced to the authors work one day in Barnes and Noble via the Hood Rat series. I was waiting for someone to get off of work and I sat on the floor and read the entire book. Since then, I have faithfully been following his releases. `Animal' was nothing short of awesome. K'wan is very good at tying all of the books in the series together without losing the characters', or the reader's interest. I'm sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for part II's release in November. less
