Book review: The Book of Gold, by Bob Staake

Staake, Bob. The Book of Gold. Schwartz & Wade, 2017. $17.99. unp. ISBN 978-0-553-51077-5. Ages 4-7. P6Q7

Isaac Gutenberg hates to read, but he becomes a voracious reader after a woman tells him about a book that “turns to solid gold” when he opens it. At first Isaac only opens books, but soon he starts to peruse parts of them and then develops an insatiable curiosity. Staake’s digital art covers different time periods since 1935 and settings from New York to India as Isaac searches the world for that one book.

Verdict: The book will give more pleasure to adults than children because of its messaging and excessive text, and the didactic approach may not appeal younger readers. Yet the visuals will attract interest, and librarians will appreciate it.
