review 1: Intense book, more intense than I would have thought. I read this book while living in Nepal and finished it while sitting in the foot hills of the Himalayas, in the country. Perhaps my location in addition to the writing had such an effect on me. The people of Nepal are much like the people who help the main character in the book, very nice - always ready to help you or invite you in for dinner after only just meeting you. Then there are the street dogs here, most are sweet and loving. This book is intense, but in a great way. The writer sure knows how to put sentences together. I hope he doesn't mind that I left this book at the lodge in Sarangkot, Nepal, for future travelers to read and enjoy.
review 2: Wow. I'm still reeling a bit. From the beauty. Ho
... morew I can say that about a book so depressing I can't quite figure out. I guess it's the beauty and unveiling of the souls of these characters. This book has a happy ending but you don't know it until you've wrapped yourself back around the beginning. There are intense scenes, both in the Civil War and the 1899 story plot. And what you end up seeing is that there are no absolutes in right or wrong. There are beautiful souls on all sides. We just need to reach across. less
