The Ballantyne Legacy
review 1: I really enjoyed the first 3/4 of this book. It had intriguing characters, building tension, and fascinating history (underground railroad). I really am not sure what happened exactly, but it just started dragging on and my interest started waning along with my rating. Very disappointed this one did not finish strong, not in terms of story itself, but in how the resolution was presented to the reader.
review 2: This is the second book in the Ballantyne Legacy series. Although it isn't absolutely necessary to read the first one because past events are summarized, it's helpful to read it first because it creates a richer picture of this family (and the Turlocks). This sequel begins 29 years after the end of the first book and focuses on the youngest of Eden an
... mored Silas's four children, Ellie. I love Laura Frantz's writing because the characters seem so real and her historical research (events, setting, language) is wonderful. I loved Jack and Ellie and their romance although I wanted some more interaction between them alone. Jack's personal and spiritual journey throughout the book kept me interested, really rooting for him to live past the "taint" of his Turlock name. Ellie was a big-hearted, genteel young lady who had the Ballantyne "steel" even if she questioned herself many times. Jack's younger sister, Chloe, was an endearing addition especially with her matchmaking machinations. That being said, my feelings toward this book were influenced by my read of the first book, Love's Reckoning (The Ballantyne Legacy Book #1): A Novel. I wanted to see more interactions just between Silas and Eden because I was so happy to see them again! This book also had a different feel compared to the first one because it included the social justice issue of slavery and the Ballantyne's secret activities with abolitionism. In addition, the prologue made me anticipate Elspeth (Eden's sister) coming back and creating havoc. She does return but her turnaround at the end seemed a little abrupt. If you haven't read the first book, these things wouldn't be an issue. The end of the book included a preview of the next book, which focuses on Ellie's brother, Ansel and his daughter. Overall, I recommend this book with 4.5 stars! less
