review 1: I really wanted to love this book, especially since it's set in my hometown and the author writes about an event I study. And I think it's because of those factors that I couldn't love the book. While I think it was interesting that she chose a love story to shore up why the shots were fired that night, and we don't know why they were fired, it seemed in many ways trivial to me. I also realize that it was my greater expectations that were not met that left me feeling underwhelmed by the book. The love story may be the new about the book, but the author follows the same thinking and logic of others around East St. Louis. She quotes a line from Jonathan Kozol, of the hopelessness of the city, which was written in the early 1990s, to show how people were feeling in the e... morearly 1900s, which isn't true. It's these glaringly obvious opinions of today that put on the time of yesterday. I also think she could've done a better job of explaining why the Goodwins chose East St. Louis of all the places to move. So there are some In the end you would not be upset that you read the book.
review 2: Nicely done historical fiction. There are many critiques of this book that want this to be a happy ending but I feel that she's given us a very believable ending that says true to the historical time period in which the story is set. There couldn't be a happy ending for these characters in this period. It's a story of surviving against the history in which they had to live. The story keeps the reader intrigued and it stays true to history. less
