review 1: I wanted to like this book, but I just couldn't warm up to the main character, Lauren, the director of an animal rescue center. She was so controlling, justifying it by saying she had to be sure to find perfect homes for her charges. She spent an awful lot of time preaching about animal care and against animal cruelty to anyone who would listen...and to the reader. Although I'm certainly an advocate for animal rights, I found her attitude to be condescending. The mystery could have been interesting, but Lauren felt that the police and security company weren't doing their jobs, so she took it upon herself to investigate. Unfortunately her investigation simply involved finding people to accuse and hoping she could talk them into confessing. And I'm still not clear why ... moreit is called Beaglemania since there was no particular reference to that breed of dog. I won't be reading any more in this series.
review 2: This is the first cozy mystery that made me cry, but not because of the animals...rather it was the kindness shown towards a sick woman who was being foreclosed on and trying to surrender her much loved dog to give him a better life. This was a good start to a new series featuring a woman who loves animals and manages the HoTRescues animal shelter. It's a spinoff of another series which I haven't read, but it was a fine stand alone read. In this first installment, Lauren Vancouver finds out that a man she has been trying to rehabilitate has thrown puppies down a storm drain...he is later found dead at her shelter and she is the prime suspect. Lots of twists, worth the read. less
