review 1: Mia Quinn is on the telephone with a fellow attorney when she hears a noise and the line goes dead. The other attorney has just been shot in the basement of her home. Mia is just back to work in the King County prosecutor's office after the death of her husband. She is up to her neck in debt and dealing with a teenage son and a preschool daughter. Now, she is asked to lead the investigation into her friend's death. As the investigation proceeds, she finds that not everything is as it appears. Friends may be enemies, and an old enemy may be a friend. The killer is not revealed until the last few pages of the book, but the action is nonstop before that. Well written and engrossing. The first book in a new series. I would look forward to book... more two.
review 2: This was clearly the first book in a series because there seemed to be different storylines going on and not all of them were completely developed. Mia Quinn is struggling after her husband's unexpected death and his deception about the state of their finances. She overhears her friend/co-worker being shot and is assigned to investigate her death. However, I felt there were too many things going on that distracted from the main mystery: Mia trying to juggle single motherhood/job/finances, Gabe's peer pressure issues, Brooke's nighttime screaming, Mia's issues with Charlie, Mia getting to know Eli, the Facebook bullying case, and Mia's father's faith. There was just so much going on that I wish the plot was tighter and more focused on the mystery of who killed Colleen. I think because this is the first book in a series, all those plotlines were setting the stage for future storylines like a possible Mia/Eli/Charlie love triangle (I hope not) and even questions surrounding Scott's death (as Charlie speculates). Even though this is an inspirational suspense, Mia is not a believer but her father has become one. God is only mentioned when her father is in the story, otherwise it seems like a regular suspense story. With all that being said, it still is a solid mystery and there were some unexpected twists. I think I'd have to read the second book to see if the story is more focused. I listened to this as an audiobook and the narration was good. less

A good mystery. The main character is compelling and her son's dealings with bullying feel spot on.
