review 1: One of those books where you find yourself cheering for the main character from the very first chapter. So honest and real. I found myself just wanting to reach through the book and make everything better for Albie. In the end, the way Albie handles his struggles at school, the teasing by the bullies and the pressure from his parents makes him so endearing. Right up there with one of my other favorites, "Wonder".
review 2: This book is on a list of possible Newbery contenders, but I don't think it has any chance of getting that kind of recognition. My problems with the book are numerous. Albie seems so immature socially, which leads the reader to believe that he is perhaps on the autism spectrum, yet he isn't identified as having any disability and muddles a
... morelong getting 7 or 8 out of 10 spelling words correct after studying with all sorts of study systems. His parents seem totally out of touch -- firing Calista --the only person who seemed to know or care about Albie -- was incredibly inappropriate unless the author just wanted us to know you're never supposed to lie to your parents -- and what's up with the horrible grandfather?? If that were my dinner table my father would have been the one to leave it before finishing his dinner. less
