review 1: I found Pretenders difficult. It was all written in five freshmen's (Lily, Duffy, Jagger, Sheridan, Vanessa) journal entries. They are writing this for their English assignment. The story changed a lot; each person had a lot going on at the same time. It was a lot to keep up with. The strengths of this book were the beginning and middle parts because the story seemed like it made more sense. The weaknesses were near the end of the story where it seemed like nothing interesting was happening, and it was boring. The characters stopped having interesting encounters or writing interesting things in their journals. I think it changed too much and didn't have a plot at all. It was all over the place. Pretenders is part of a series and I don't think I will continue to read this... more series. I liked the introduction to the characters, like when Lily talked about being home schooled, and learning about their backgrounds. The girls all really liked one of the guys and the guys liked one of the girls that was not the one who liked him. I did not like that the guys never figured it out, and how twisted it was. I did not like that it ended in a disaster and no one got what they wanted; in the end Sheridan, Lily, and Vanessa got into a fight. It ended with Lilly crying on the sidewalk with Blake. I never would have guessed from the beginning that it would end like that. I feel like the audience would not appreciate most of this book.
review 2: I am really disappointed in this book. At first it was good, but then the characters started getting annoying with all their problems with popularity. Most importantly, there was absolutely no resolution to the plot. The book literally ended right when everyone was at the highest point of their conflicts. I wish the author would at least hint who X is, or how each individual became one of the Phoenix Five. Without it, this book just felt like a bunch of random journal entries. In addition, I couldn't really distinctly tell what lies the kids were telling. For example, regarding Jagger, I didn't know who SEAL was or what he did or even if he was real. I began to dislike every person in the story for his or her selfishness. Like Sheridan, who couldn't get over the fact that she wouldn't always be the star of the show, or Vanessa, who stole Lily's quiz just to "earn" a meal at Benihana. The author also made her story very twenty-first century-ish by using names of celebrities and brands that are well known now. I feel that a good book would have a story in which it could take place in any place at any time, not just a wealthy town in America in 2012 at a cliché high school where there's always a mean girl whom every boy loves. So in conclusion, don't read this terrible book. Although I might just read the sequel just to find out if it's any better. less
