review 1: Another delightful historical romance from long-time favorite Chase, read by another favorite Kate Reading. The Noirot sisters, extraordinary seamstresses, hope to set up a fashionable dressmaking shop in London--and they plan to do this by dressing Lady Clara Fairfax and thus making their name. (Dressmaking is a cutthroat business--there's a lot of stealing of patterns and copying dresses. Who knew?) Marcelline plans to capture the Duke of Clevedon's attention, not for romance but to get her hands on his fiancee, Clara. All goes well, except for their unexpectedly falling in love. A little suspense, playful love story, lots of details of fashion (chapter headings are all quotations from contemporary books), witty banter. A lovely Romance--not as laugh out loud as Julia Qu... moreinn, but for anyone who likes Mary Balogh.
review 2: 4.5 What a lovely surprise, this story was wonderfully emotionally rich. I didn't expect the sad sad and then happy happy and then oh no oh god no and then finally joy joy TEARS I cried throughout as I stayed up well past my typical bed time to finish this goodness because while I have loved some other Chase stories, I vaguely recall reading the 2nd book in this series a while back and thinking "well it's ok". The H is a player who has shirked his 'duties'.The h is a shop keeper who already has a 6 year old kid and is only in her early/mid 20s (do the math).On paper these characters are...questionable as the type of romantic leads I want to read about in my light chick lit historical romance/fiction.And of course neither is what they seem and they are fantastic together.There's really not much smex, it's all verbal banter.And the little kid is a DELIGHT. I love that kid and I don't even like kids all that much. less
