review 1: Sophy was a Noirot, a breed keenly tuned to animal excitement- and not possessing much in the way of moral principals. And that people, is the heroine!Sophy is one witty chica, with an even wittier cache of words, that keep you hooked.“Love will have its work cut out for it. I’m not like you. I’m not sensitive. If love wants to take hold of me, not only will it have to knock me on my arse, it’ll have to tie me down and beat to a pulp what some optimistically call my brains.”And that people, is the hero!Lord Longmore is piratical and assuming and all the more fun for it!This book has sharp repartee that makes you laugh and wring your hands. Not to mention the clever disguises that Sophy assumes.Cousin Gladys was my favorite!Okay so the story goes…Longmore’s mo... morether doesn’t patronize Maison Noirot and as a result their customers are leaving in droves. It is a sticky situation indeed. It only becomes stickier when Lady Clara, their premier patroness and the reason for the majority of the clientele, is caught in a well-planned compromising position with a good-for-nothing baron with empty pockets. Who would pay for the dresses? What if Lady Clara goes to Dowdy’s?Oh, quelle horreur! And to top it all off, Lady Clara gets the intelligent idea-which I really did think was intelligent-to up and leave the country!“….. She can’t hit back. She can’t make them stop. It must have been horrible for her. And so she ran away. It was that or run mad, I don’t doubt. I’m worried about her, and I wish she hadn’t done it-but I have to admire her risking everything, rather than passively suffering.”So Sophy and Longmore set out on a journey to Portsmouth to bring her and her bulldog like maid back. That’s when they do the dirty and love knocks them on their arse.My favoritest dialogue:“You are a spoiled, aristocratic blockhead,” she said. “You know nothing about me. You don’t know what I’ve lived through. You’re a child. An infant. A spoiled, temperamental overgrown baby who hits back when he can’t get his own way.”The scene that followed this was not too bad either!Sophy has a knack of getting out of sticky situations too. As she proved on the naval docks in Portsmouth.“…….But I suspect Miss Noirot would have come after me with a chair or a potted plant-or she would have shrieked and fainted.”That from said overgrown baby Longmore!“Still….we might have made one of those….you know….little squirmy pink things that howl.”Isn’t he adorable!Read it honestly.I’m in love with this book.Totally.Forever!“Goodbye,” he said.“Good riddance,” she said.He peeled off his coat. “I’m never coming back,” he said.“Never is too soon,” she said.He untied his neckcloth. “I’m done with you.”“I was done with you ages ago.”He started to unfasten his trousers.“I’m leaving and I’ll never come back,” he said as he knelt between her legs.“Good,” she gasped. “I can’t wait to see the last of you.”“I won’t miss you at all,” he said.“I’ve forgotten you already.”See what I mean?Huh?Huh?And when the fact came out to Longmore about her being a Dreadful DeLucey…“ ‘And she’s a Dreadful Delucey. I’ve married into a gang of them.’ My heart soared. And I almost did myself an injury, not laughing.”Why won’t you read it?Why shouldn’t you read it?
review 2: I liked the first one a little bit better. Still, a wonderful book. I loved both Sophy and Longmore. The part I didn't love was Clara's storyline. I have to admit, that she's not my favorite character in these books. She's a bit boring compared to the Noirot sisters. Though I was starting to like her at the end of the first book when she told off Clevedon so nicely. That was one step forward, but her storyline in this one felt like two steps backward. Sad face. Oh, well. less
