review 1: Based loosely around Dicken's Oliver Twist, Lorraine Heath's "In Bed with the Devil" explores what happens when Feagan's urchins grow up and take up more less respectable positions in society.Luke, the Earl of Claybourne was rescued from the gallows by an old man who believed him to be his long lost grandson, but Luke struggles with the thought that he conned him.. Raised on the streets of London with a band of little thieves he is more connected to his childhood past then with the peers of the realm. Lady Catherine Mabry seeks Luke out with a request for help. Together they form an unholy alliance, she will help him equip his childhood friend to cope with society and he will take care of a problem for her.I've over indulged on historical romances recently and I think that... more this may be reflected in the 3 star rating. I did enjoy an escapist afternoon reading it and at several points found myself smiling at the characters antics. The characters were well developed and the writing engaging, but fir some reason I can't quite put my finger on, I veered between loving it and feeling just so about it.
review 2: 3.5 starsLucian Claybourne is known as the Devil Earl, a former child of the streets who was nearly hung for killing a man before the Earl of Claybourne recognized Lucian as his lost grandson and Lucian went along with it. Lady Catherine Mabry has been intrigued by Lucian since she first saw him and when she finds herself in need of a man willing to kill, she goes to his doorstep. This was an emotional and fast-paced read, with several clever, if a little obvious, references to Oliver Twist. It also has an appealing pair at its center: Catherine is brave and determined, willing to go to great lengths to protect those she loves and to disregard the strict rules of her society. I found myself genuinely liking her and understanding even her most impulsive decisions. Luke is a rake, like many HR heroes, but his goodness is always apparent and he lacks many of the common alpha-male problems that have previously driven me crazy in historical romances. They seem to connect on both an intellectual and a physical level, and they're drawn together by more than just lust. The supporting characters, all of whom get their own books (I assume), are also well drawn, especially the members of Luke's childhood gang of thieves. Finally, this book deals with some serious issues: poverty, domestic abuse, death. Heath handles them all sensitively and provides a satisfying resolution to the many troubles that her characters have encountered. A solid start to a series that, despite my mixed experiences with Heath's other books, may have intrigued me enough to continue. less
