review 1: Whoa! I had read about this series and was prepared for a good read, but this actually exceeded my expectations. The back cover blurb (I read the Swedish edition) compared this to Tove Jansson and Hayao Miyazaki, two of my all-time favorite artists. This I found a bit pretentious, but I must admit after reading the book, that it was quite probably a correct combination of influences. Not that I'm putting Pearson on the level of these two giants, but it does describe the content quite well.Pearson throws us right into a mysterious fantasy world, where strange creatures roams and we get to see this through the eyes of a young girl, who seems to take everything, including very nearly being trodden upon by a giant, as just part of her daily routine. I’m intrigued by this wo... morerld and its inhabitants, and the little girl who seems quite normal is a great focus for the readers experience of the story. The art is beautiful, lighthearted and precise at the same time, giving this a feel of being both a modern day comic and an old fairy tale. I especially liked the coloring, which is subdued and OK, so I’m convinced. I’ll get the rest of the books in this series, to see if Pearson lives up to this great forts volume. If so, I think we’re looking at a future classic in children’s comics.
review 2: The drawing style was adorable but Hilda's voice... not so much. It felt too adult even though I know kids can talk like adults. Rather than an adult trapped in a child's body, Hilda felt an adult pretending to be trapped in a child's body. If that makes any sense. Otherwise, the drawings and backgrounds were great and reminiscent of a digital version of Watterson's broad landscapes. The humor was good (such as the lost giant). less

A sweet, if brief, story about a little girl who lives in a world inhabited by magical creatures.

There is a serious amount of both quirky and pretty in this lovely little book. I love it.
