review 1: Hilda discovers that her supposedly remote house is surrounded by populous communities of very tiny sprites who want her and her mother to leave. There's also an enormous giant hanging around. Hilda intrepidly sets out to fix everything, and succeeds in the end. Watch out for flying bunnies. Strangely, the publisher's note at the top here describes a considerably different plot---perhaps it was revised for the translation? A.
review 2: I enjoyed the colorful illustrations and bizarre cartoons, but the story wasn't what I hoped it would be. Hilda signs several contracts/forms and she is finally allowed to see the little folk that live around her secluded house in the mountains. They have demanded that her mother and herself move and have attacked her house with
... morerocks. Hilda sets out to make peace with the little folk and tries to convince the mayor, the prime minister, and finally the king of the little people to give her mother and herself permission to stay in their house. Of course there is a subplot involving a giant. less
