review 1: Mysterious, tiny letters keep arriving at Hilda's house. Each letter forcefully encourages Hilda and her mother to move away. It's up to Hilda to make peace or her mother has threatened that they will move to the city at the next sign of trouble.Hilda discovers a whole community of little people (think Dr. Seuss' Whos) living near her home. It is their mission to get rid of her, but she embarks on a journey to speak with the Prime Minister of the little people. Meanwhile, Hilda is concerned when she sees a shadowy giant and seeks to find out whether it may be intent on causing harm. This book has a magical element that brings to mind such great fantastical journeys as Oz and Lord of the Rings, though with plenty of humor thrown in. Recommeneded for grades... more 4-6.
review 2: Luke Pearson’s Hilda graphic novel series is whimsical, funny, and excruciatingly charming. Hilda is a blue haired girl living in a magical world filled with trolls, invisible tiny people, exotic birds, flying giant cats, and a lonely wooden man. Hilda is a kind, thoughtful person, and her character develops nicely throughout the series. Although created for children, this series is a delight for all ages.Hildafolk is followed by the remarkable Hilda and the Midnight Giant. In this sequel, Hilda begins finding tiny letters demanding that she and her mother move away. Isolated in the countryside, Hilda cannot figure out who would be demanding that they move (particularly in such a tiny fashion.) As Hilda solves the mystery, a beautiful hidden world is revealed and Hilda and her mother must decide if they should stay in their beloved home and risk stepping on their neighbors, or moving on to start a new life in the city. less
