review 1: Though it starts a little slow, and seems at first to be rather predictable (the contrast between the narrator and her mother is just a little too obvious and too strongly drawn, some of the descriptions of Meg's life by her mother seemed a little too far out for even a child to believe, even given her mother's propensity for exaggeration and fantasy, but then I guess that's the point the author was trying to make), it picks up speed in the middle, and by the end, I was sold! I hated the scenes between Meg and her boyfriend because the author made him such a one-dimensional character, and likewise the new person in her life was just a little too perfect. Loved the descriptions of food, their garden, etc. And, I liked how the author didn't completely tie up all the loose en... moreds, because life doesn't tie them all up for you. It's fun, easy reading, the kind of book you start and don't want to put down, but with enough content to make you think a bit.
review 2: This is a quirky story about a woman who has come home to take care of her mom as she is dying. What I liked most about this book is not the main character herself, which I didn't really like, but the stories her mom told her when she was a child and where she came from. There were so many fun stories and creative stories that her mom told. And what you appear to think happened to her mom, isn't really the case. I especially enjoyed that after her mom dies, you see all the good she was doing in the neighborhood. Overall, very beautiful story of relationships and motherhood and realizing that moms just do all they can to save their children. less
