review 1: I wanted to like this book. I really did. The concept was good, people with different magical abilities and Opal Cowan, a girl whose magic lies in her glass making who sets off to solve a problem in the kingdom. And here is where it started going wrong....I wasn't feeling it at all!I had a problem with the romance or lack of any what so ever. Opal "thinks" about a guy then she "thinks" about another guy and plods along in a sort of relationship. And then she what, has sex with him? What? Why? I couldn't even tell if she really liked him...there was no emotional connection there. Yeah so that bothered me (some). And I got bored! The story continually moved from one thing to the next with no obvious overarching plot line. Sure I guess it all tied up in the end but it was the ... moreplodding from one thing to the next that finally did me in. I finally gave up at about 75% and started flipping through the pages to get to the end.Overall I was disappointed. The book had a good premise but lacked in heart and drive. I will not be continuing with this series or going back to read the previous one.
review 2: I enjoyed this much more than the second two Study books. I loved the stormdancers, and Maria Snyder clearly does too - and it's nice to see that Opal's a bit less irritating than Yelena. However. She has the same problems that Yelena has. Unsure of her own abilities yet she has no remorse with things she should feel guilty about - such as sleeping with Ulrick when he's clearly not himself? It's not the first time this trick has worked on her! She admits that she loves Kade but owes it to Ulrick to try a relationship? What the heck?On the other hand, it was lovely to see Ari and Janco back, and i'm interested to see more of Devlan. I do hope Opal doesn't fall in love with him as well, since I don't think I could handle any more love interests (even if he is the most interesting one so far.)If Opal were in a horror movie, she'd be dead within minutes. less

I really enjoyed this book. It was a fast read, with a lot of action. Though it had been awhile since I read the Poison Study series, so I had to refresh my memories on that trilogy's plot line. The main character, Opal, alternated between being real for me, and needing a smack upside the head. At times her 'woe is me, I can't do anything' attitude grated. It was nice to see a sprinkling of the main characters from the previous books as well. I'm also a little confused by Kade's sudden proposal of love. The two characters barely exchanged words when they met! Seemed a little fast to me.All in all, I will be reading the next one, just to see where it goes. I hope my interest level doesn't peter out like the Poison Study's did.

It's not bad. It's not that good either. There is a lot going on, A LOT. Opal is cool, She is a bit stupider, a bit less kick ass, a bit less brave and over all a lot less cool that Yelena. Kade is great, I actually like him as much as Valec except that we hardly see him. Ulrick is just terrible. Over possessive, over protective, Over boring. Opals, magic is really interesting, More interesting that Yelena's actually, and that's what saves this book, the problem is overall it's just following the algorithm of the study series too closely for my liking. It doesn't seem new it just seems like the same old stuff happening over and over again.
