review 1: Mark Billingham is probably my favourite 'modern' crime writer. I've been reading his Tom Thorne novels since the first one was published and the standard has remained remarkably high. This one revolves around the 'suicides' of elderly people which Tom Thorne, bumped back down into uniform, decides to investigate 'off the books'...a quick and entertaining read. I've missed one in the series and will definitely be going back to fill in gap.
review 2: This is a Tom Thorne detective mystery. I liked the character of Thorne who is a cynical, no-nonsense British police officer. The mystery centers around a series of suicides committed by elderly individuals. Thorne figures out these suicides are not truly suicides but homicides. Of course no one on the police force... more believes him, so it is up to Thorne to solve the cases. My only complaint is that the reader knows who the murderer is by the middle of the story. I like mysteries in which I don't know who the murderer is until the end of the story. less
