review 1: This could have easily been 4 or 5 stars. The plot itself is actually cool, and all the narrative beats are there. But for a standalone piece, I can only wonder what (other than having to draw more pages) kept it from being so rushed and therefore short.Peter Parker discovers he has a sister, and gets involved with the Kingpin on the hunt for mysterious tech related to his family. He also gets to travel the world a bit. All cool stuff, intriguing and with a good choice in characters (except for one Act 2 costumed villain that did not need to be there). But the ideas and the reactions of the characters were never allowed to breathe and sink in. The major plot revelations are handed out and Spidey's just like, "Well, alright."Plus, Kingpin is a great villain. Being able to m... moreanipulate Spider-man--or the forces operating around him--is valuable. Spider-man starts the comic as saying he is "the world's dumbest genius", and Kingpin proves that to be true. Spidey can take apart his enemies by finding their weaknesses because SCIENCE, but he can't think anyone would betray or lie to him. A good character dynamic that would have gotten a lot more mileage out of the story. So, fantastic art, good use of characters, and a could-have-been-serviceable plot that was crammed into too few pages. I read it during dinner and enjoyed it, but would have liked to see more from all the elements involved.
review 2: It's rare that I would borrow rather than buy Spider-Man but this one just bypassed me and my list of things I need to get is too long for the money to stretch. Non continuity tales get knocked lower down in priority.Wade does a nice job with Pete but the story itself is a little mediocre. I've never been a fan of the Parker's being super secret CIA agents (to me, it robs Peter of the humble background, ultimately he's just another super brainy secret agent sprog who lucked into powers). Still, the globe trotting didn't bother me as much as it has in the past. It's quite predictable though, reveals and reversals just as you would expect. Please please please, don't give Pete a sister. Not needed.Dell'Otto brings the business as you would expecting, leaving a touch of class and raising the quality. Not sure I need this in my collection though and that's saying something. less
