review 1: Emilie is a runaway from a tough family situation and ends up stowing away on a boat headed to a different world. It's an upbeat, adventure novel with good details on how the magical system works in both worlds. My main complaint is that Emilie is a great character in action, but I didn't get to know her very well behind the scenes. It's a great, quick read with a steampunk setting that will please many young readers.
review 2: A really splendid, rousing read. I loved Emilie to bits, and I quickly grew fond of the other characters, particularly Kenar and Rani, but also Miss Marlende and her father and Lord Engal. The one caveat I had was that it read a little more middle-school to me than YA, and Emilie often seemed younger than her 16 years. But that didn't ma
