review 1: Wonderful juvenile adventure novel. Has a lot of the old Jules Verne feel, with enough elements that it will appeal to steampunk fans. A young girl runs away from her aunt and uncle and stows away on the wrong ship. Rather than going to a port city where a cousin lives, she's on a rescue ship that will traverse the aethyr currents to journey underwater to a land in the hollow center of the world. While she's a "plucky" adventuress, there's nothing stereotypical about her, and she's quite appealing as the heroine of the book.
review 2: I wanted to like this one, but it fell a bit flat for me. I have a few friends who read it and liked it which is why I picked it up, and while the story has merit and the writing is good, I just couldn't get into it. The reaso
... moren I had so much trouble was the simple fact that the main character is so distant from the story. She quite literally does nothing. She just stands around and sees things happen to the people around her and gets put into circumstances buy chance and luck. She doesn't get involved in the world, she doesn't influence or change it at all, she is just there. As readers, we are already removed from the story by a degree, so it is imperative that the narrator of a story make it as real and engaging as possible. We want to see things happen, not see someone see things happen. I won't be picking up the next one, but I am willing to give the author another chance in the future. less
