The Books of the Raksura
review 1: Definitely different (and props to Wells for that - I would not have expected this kind of world from the writer of the Ile Rien series) but something about how foreign the characters were (mostly the whole, 'for the colony!' mentality, but other, trivial things as well -some of which may not have been intentional ie that the Raksura are continually described as 'hissing') and the casual, modern language made it difficult for me to connect with this book. I was also disappointed to find that Wells' keen and meta sense of humor, as seen in Death of the Necromancer, was missing in action which is a terrible shame as this book could have done with a touch of that. I also didn't really like the centrality of the females want/need to breed with Moon plot tbh. In fact, I would ... morebe happy if I never came across another x must breed with y plot ever again (I blame you, Harry Potter fandom for this aversion). So though I liked the book, lots of qualms.
review 2: I adore this book (series). The world is fantastic and imaginative and really "takes you away" from your own personal world and troubles. The protagonist, Moon, is very identifiable to me. As a young gay person, I've had my share of struggles to fit in, and worries that I would never find a place to belong, and Moon's struggles in many ways reflect mine. His quest to belong, and his feeling of abandonment by his people really hit home. Learning to trust is a central issue in this series and Martha Wells tackles it quite well. less

This book was surprisingly good and funny. It started a little slow but is really worth the read.

Another good book by Martha Wells. Hopefully it's a series. A different take on shapeshifters.
