review 1: Wonderful addition to the series. I wasn't as caught by The Falling World (though it's always nice to see the gang again), but the Tale of Indigo and Cloud was a wonderful addition to the universe. I love how involved the court politics are, and how real the matriarchal culture feels. The world building is gorgeously thought through, but still always in service of telling a story, not just showing off.The two short stories at the end were also excellent. I believe Wells had them up on her website, but I'd never gotten around to reading them.
review 2: This is such a consistently good series, with increasingly layered and complex worldbuilding and great characters. Here Wells gives us two novellas (novelettes? not sure of length) and two short stories from varyi
... moreng time periods and points of view. The first and longest is about the group of Raksura we know the best (Moon, Jade, Stone, Chime, et al.), while the third jumps back to tell of a piece of Moon's childhood (from another POV, so that we see fledgling Moon from the outside). The final story also has to do with a familiar character, showing Chime's transformation from mentor to warrior. The second story might have been my favorite, though: "The Tale of Indigo and Cloud" tells how that queen and consort came together, many years ago. Raksura gender politics are always interesting, and this tale of a queen stealing a consort from another queen was particularly complex in its interactions and consequences. Plus, bonus fledgling Stone!I'm looking forward enormously to the second volume, due out in April. Perhaps I'll indulge myself with a series reread then. less
