review 1: This book started out okay, but at some point it just got exhausting. I liked the writing and generally liked Stefan's voice. I really liked how the dialogue was written, most of it felt very natural and the author was able to pull off some dialect things without going over the top. I can't really pinpoint when things started to go wrong. The love/hate at the beginning made the book seem like it'd be a fun ride, but then a confession changes everything. It might have been that, though it seemed to be handled well. Maybe it was just Stefan's character that wore me out. He's a Gary Stu with a tragic back story and a heart of gold. About every 10 pages someone tells him that he's beautiful and practically molests him. He saves everyone's lives and everyone just loves him no m... moreatter how much of a dick they are to everyone else.I got really fed up with him when it finally came to his BFF's wedding. I understand that him being upset, making the wedding day about himself, and then redeeming himself was the whole point of it, but the thing is that he kept doing it even after he realized he was being kind of awful. It didn't tie into the story or his character to have such a random sad-sack, angsty moment when he's always, always there for everyone and treats Char, his BFF, like a goddess. When the wedding party is riding out to the venue all anyone can talk about is how amazing and beautiful he looks and how unique his tan-with-pink-lapels tuxedo (ew...) is. When Char is about to walk down the aisle she can't stop talking about how wonderful he looks. I half expected everyone to give Stefan a standing ovation when he got up to the front of the church or something. It was so baffling.Once the wedding is over with, the last 1/5th of the book becomes a random life-and-death mystery/suspense story that doesn't really fit with the rest of the book, other than a very small hint earlier in the book.
review 2: (I seem to forgive audiobooks more, I'm afraid, and this one I'd probably drop very quickly if I had it in a text version.)Too many self-contradictions and lack of logic, a barely existing, unnecessarily drawn-out plot, a protagonist I found immensely unlikable despite us being told over and over again how perfect he is. His actions proved otherwise, and the blatant convincing and worshiping at every turn only made it more annoying. The writing was full of cliches that were actually repeated within the very same book, making it feel as if the author's vocabulary was too small for even a typical yaoish romance novel. less
