review 1: This is the first book in this series that I’ve read so I don’t if this is typical of this author or not. I have to say I thought it would have a bit more to do with racing than it did, so I’m puzzled as to why this title. I had no trouble staying interested but I did feel as though the author left a lot of questions unanswered. Possibly there will be some explanations in a later book? The author did a good job with character development. Judith and her husband are likeable but her cousin Renie I really just didn’t get her or her husband and his friend Oscar but as they say you can pick your friends but you can’t pick your relatives. Gertrude I definitely liked. Who doesn’t like a stubborn, opinionated senior citizen who makes you laugh? The mystery was cle... morear at the beginning but the more new characters that were brought into the story the more confusing it became, especially, as it turned out most of them had nothing to do with the mystery or it’s solution. In fact, there were a number of strange happenings and people who weren’t explained at all.I won this book in a First Reads giveway.
review 2: I've read all the books in this series, but as "the cousins" get older they are slowing down and so is the pace of the books. Mary Daheim has a well-developed sense of humor, that can range form corny, to edgy, to visual comedy, but that too is slowing down. In "Gone with the Win," Judith kept getting dragged into solving the murder even though she continuously stated that she wouldn't, and after awhile it got tiresome. Plus the clues were convoluted and the details bogged down the story. Would I let this stop me from reading the author's next book. No. But I just couldn't find it in me to give it more than 3 stars. less

Excellent!! Love all Mary's books. Always fun to read about Judith and Renie's sleuthing.

3.5 Well written and good story. It was longer than it needed to be and lagged in places.
