review 1: I got snookered into reading this book by it's awesome cover. The book lacked depth. Characters and plot points lacked description and seemed rushed. The twelve-year-old protagonist acted much older than his years. In other books this wouldn't have bothered me but as it was already lacking many other areas, It seemed a bit ridiculous at times. I was greatly disappointed as The Clockwork Three was a beautifully written book with great descriptions and character development. Will the second book be a greater flop or could the series rebound? I guess we'll have to see.
review 2: Quantum League #1: Spell Robbers by Matthew J. Kirby is a strange and somewhat sad book. Ben and his mother have moved to another new city. This time Mom will be working towards a Maste
... morers Degree in Medieval Literature and working as a Teaching Assistant. Ben’s first day at his new school was a little strange as a cafeteria table lifts from the floor and breaks in halve, putting a quick end to what was becoming a case of bullying. Ben meets Peter after the table incident and a friendship might begin to develop. When Ben returns home from school, his mom is laying out her clothes for her first day. They chat a bit about Ben’s day and Ben goes into the kitchen to start dinner. While boiling noodles and microwaving pasta sauce Ben find the pill his mother was to have taken that morning. He gives it to her and she swallows it. As they begin to adjust to the new routine, she mentions that a colleague runs a Science Camp after school and she thinks Ben would enjoy the camp. When Ben joins the Camp he discovers that Peter is already a member and that this camp is studying quantum physics in a most unusual way. From imagining fireballs, rain and clouds to producing them doing what are called Actuations is a strange experience. Then the Dread Cloaks arrive. They plan to steal Dr. Hughes’s portable augmenter equipment but when she tells them that the equipment is not always reliable, they take her along to perfect her machinery. As this is happening another group of people arrive. This group calls itself Quantum League and they do their best to enlist Peter and Ben for what they refer to as the “Quantum War”. Enlisting in the League involves being detached from their families, which Peter views as a positive. Peter has a genius IQ but his father is constantly testing him and giving him assignments that are designed to raise his IQ leaving Peter feeling like he’ll never be able to meet his father’s expectations. Ben is horrified by the thought of being detached from his mother; he knows that she relies on him the same way that small children rely on their parents and he worries that if he is not there she will not take her medication. The League promises to re-attach Ben after he helps them rescue Dr. Hughes and regain control of her equipment. After the rescue the League tells Ben that there is no way to reattach families. Ben leaves the League vowing to find a way to re-connect with his mom. The reader is left hanging and wondering what will happen next. Will we follow Ben or Peter in the next book or will we end up with a whole new cast of characters? All we can do is wait and dream up our own solutions. less
