review 1: Yet another Star Wars book. These things never seem to end - which I"m thankful for. Most of them are fair to good, but this verged on excellent. Directly after Episode VI, Luke is sent to command Rogue Squadron in an assault on the dark forces that control the planet Mindor. The original set-up is superficially similar to most of the Expanded Universe standalone novels. From the moment they reach the planet, though, both the writing and the plot are clearly superior. The battle is (ridiculously) complicated by asteroids, gravitational manipulation, and sun flares, and though a lot of it was lost on me, it's definitely an operator error, because the science was written in a hard-SF style, explaining every detail. The characters' dialogue made me laugh out loud - in the goo... mored, funny-joke way - and Stover fleshed out all the characters believably (though super-angsty Luke grated my nerves). Stover also wrote one of my other favorite Star Wars books, the novelization of Revenge of the Sith (which is 100x better than the movie).
review 2: Stover is such a great addition to the Star Wars Extended Universe. This was a fun, wild ride, chock full of action and humor. Stover's Revenge of the Sith is my favorite SW novel so it was wonderful to know it had a lot to do with the author. I loved his inclusion of a character who knew Anakin before he turned. I thought it was a great way to bridge the gap between prequel trilogy and original trilogy. The Big Bad was well rounded, interesting and sufficiently Bad. His Big Bad Plan was actually quite terrifying, if you imagine him winning and what he could have accomplished. The Melters were amazing and their introduction was one of my favorite parts.I really hope Stover writes more novels set in a Galaxy Far, Far Away. less
