review 1: I am huge fan of his Craft Sequence novels, so had to read this short story as soon as I became aware of it, and Gladstone does not disappoint.Dark and oddly touching, this story tackles the midlife crisis of a vampire. The vampire has fallen in love, you see, with a slayer nonetheless. He has put away his teeth and his dark lord powers and learned to toss the ball with his troubled son and watch sports on TV. But his son's pretty young teacher awakens in him a hunger that he has all but forgotten he possesses, and he has to decide which path he must take. It is the story of all midlife crisis, human and otherwise, but with a wonderfully rich twist. But I find the real appeal of Gladstone (besides his awesome worldbuilding, see: Craft Sequence) is his use of language. It j... moreust seems to flow and hum in his hands. A subtle joke here, lovely use of a surprising word there, perfect attention to detail without weighing the pace down. Reading his stuff is pure pleasure.Highly recommend.
review 2: Dracula living his life in modern day. Oh, and he has a wife and son.How does the world's most famous vampire adapt to living as one of us?This story was a lot of fun, "sympathy for the devil" except that I actually came to see the struggle inside Vlad. It was weird, it was fun, and all in all it was a really great short story. Check it out on Tor.com, it is worth your time. less
