review 1: Agatha Raisin is back for more crime and mayhem! At a local pantomime, Agatha sees more drama than she bargains for when local baker and amateur actor, Bert Simple, dies on the set, having being staked between the legs on the trap door. It was a gruesome end to what seems like a local favorite. When Agatha is asked to investigate, she digs deep into Bert’s life and discovers there was more to this man than being just a kind baker. With the help of Sir Charles Fraith and the detectives in her agency, Agatha and her crew set out to solve the crime before there are more deaths.I love Agatha Raisin. Of all the female sleuths I read about everyday she’s my favourite. Why? She’s plucky, she’s determined and she doesn’t stop until she finds the murderer. She’s also a ... morehopeless romantic. Two bad marriages down and she’s still looking for the love of her life. When you add it all up I ask you, how can you not love Agatha Raisin? In this adventure Agatha is getting to know the amateur dramatics in Winter Parva, and trying to find out what kind of person Bert Simple was. At her side is Sir Charles Fraith, landowner and probably the best friend Agatha has, even if Agatha doesn’t think so most of the time. The Blood of an Englishman is another fun adventure with the Cotswold crew. For new readers of Agatha Raisin, it’s a good place to start. I guarantee after just one adventure with Agatha you will be wanting to go back and read her other 24 adventures. For me, I’m anxiously awaiting the next book. The closing chapter gave me a taste of what is to come and I can’t wait!
review 2: Agatha Raisin is always a bit of a crap shoot when it comes to quality of the book, from my perspective. She is sometimes mildly annoying and at other times she is wildly annoying. This was the former, and while the writing style is a bit choppy, it was enjoyable--especially if you like this series. The setting is a murder in a theater, and it doesn't appear that it will be a one off. Agatha's men are still buzzing around her, but they are both on their best behavior. less
