review 1: Shoe DogMegan MacDonaldAtheneum Books2014Picture BookAges 2-7.Shoe Dog is a story about a dog who loves to chew on shoes. He is adopted by a lady who owns a lot of shoes. When he chews up all her shoes, he gets in trouble and does not get the affection he wants from his master. Eventually the woman buys something for the dog, so the dog can become a good dog and sleep upstairs with her. This book was cute and had very interesting illustrations. The fur was illustrated in a very interesting way so it looked almost like a scribble. This would be a good pick for children's library collection. It will be popular with children and families who have dogs or love dogs.

... morewe read as possible contenders for this year's Caldecott.5 of 5 stars for the story - Shoe Dog is chosen by a loving older woman from the pet store - he has dreamed of a warm, cozy home with a yard to run in captures and lots of shoes to chew. As he destroys all of his owners shoes, he is scolded and eventually relegated to sleeping in the basement - until she brings home a pair of cat slippers. In these he finds satisfaction and no longer needs shoes to chew on.5 of 5 stars for illustrations - The rendering of Shoe Dog in a series of dirty swirls perfectly captures the character of Shoe Dog. It reminded me of the commercial where the dog goes crazy for the bacon snacks. He is a flurry of energy and excitement. On the other hand, the softer and more muted tones used to depict the older woman who adopts Shoe Dog are warm and calming. The crayon and charcoal illustrations, combined digitally, perfectly capture the characters and tone of this story!I can just imagine the enthusiastic discussion I would have with preschoolers about their pets and the crazy things they've done! less

Cute picture book of a rascally dog who chews shoes. Loved the twist in the end.
