review 1: I had a problem with the structure of this book, the prologue had me hooked but then once I knew Steph was killed it took a third of the book to get to the murder and I was impatient for it to happen to get on with the investigation. I feel that MS could have found a better way to fill in the back stories leading up to the event. Steph was totally unlikeable as were many of the characters, very few had any redeeming features and the Allie the female detective annoying with her attraction to the "bad" husband. I did guess the identity of the killer so it didn't keep me gripped. I really wanted to enjoy after seeing the author at a literary festival and she was very engaging, I believe this was her first book and there a some more in "The Estate" series which I will return ... moreto at some time, just not yet. A generous and kind three star read for me as I liked her but I hope for better to come.
review 2: I read Taunting The Dead on my Kindle. I wasn't sure what to expect, but was bowled over by the novel's fast pace and readability. If you like Ian Rankin's Rebus books, then you'll love this. Mel Sherratt explores the criminal underclass in Stoke-On-Trent, a town she knows well. I'm not always keen on the more 'gangster-style' crime novels, but this had all the elements, too, of a psychological thriller. It's certainly a page-turner! I couldn't put it down. Mel Sherratt has created a great detective character in DS Allie Shenton; clever, sharp, witty and all-too human. This is gritty, edgy stuff - lots of sex, blood and violence. It's not a book for the faint-hearted and I found my pulse racing during some of the more action-packed scenes. There's a brilliant twist at the end, making you want to read her next book to find out what happens. Excellent! less
