review 1: Good book, but one thing in particular bothered me - it's a story about complicated, fast financial maneuvering that is invisible at certain levels of scale, and yet it has no graphics or charts that help show this, even when there's a scene where one of the people in the story needs to look at graphics or charts to understand what is going on. Michael Lewis is a great writer, but a few charts would have made this even better.
review 2: Michael Lewis is truly talented at explaining complicated financial trading on Wall St. In Flash Boys, he explains what high-frequency trading is, what hardware and software it needs to succeed, and who benefits from it (finance people benefit; investors are taken for a ride.) He follows the efforts that trader Brad Katsuyama
... more (and his co-workers) make to understand how high-frequency trading works, and how HFT rigs the system. Once they understand how hard it is for investors *not* to get screwed over, they design and build their own private stock exchange, IEX, whose design goal is to make sure investors don't get screwed over by the HFTs or by the investment banks. This book made me want to read all his other books. less
